On a distant corner of my grandparents farm, there was a slab of concrete in the middle of a field. When I was very young, I fancied it was a landing pad for aliens. When I finally asked my grandfather what it was, he told me it was the basement of an old house, one that had been torn down many years before.

So much for that alien theory.

Once upon a time, a library was something only the Pope in Rome could afford. Eventually, as printing evolved and prices came down somewhat, the super wealthy were also able to amass a collection of books big enough to warrant a whole room dedicated to them.

With the advent of improved printing processes and mass production of paper, books became commonplace in most homes, and most regions boasted accessible bookstores.
